What To Expect During IVF Treatments

IVF Treatments

IVF (in vitro fertilization) is an assisted reproductive technology to help couples with infertility. It involves the fertilization of the egg outside the womb to form an embryo, which is implanted in your uterus. Although IVF treatment has a higher success rate, there are still chances that the treatment may fail to lead to a healthy pregnancy. IVF failure is when IVF cycles lead to implantation failure.

Causes of IVF Failure

There are numerous reasons why IVF treatment can fail. Here are a few of those reasons:

1. Embryo Quality

Embryo quality has a direct effect on your IVF success rate. The development of a successful pregnancy depends on the genetic integrity and viability of the embryo. Poor embryo quality may cause a failure to develop a  healthy pregnancy. This can result in implantation failure. It can also lead to loss of pregnancy in an earlier stage. Various criteria influence embryo quality. This relates to the age of eggs and sperm, the method of fertilization, and other techniques. Also, in the IVF context, chromosomal integrity can influence embryo quality.

2. Uterine Issues

The embryo implantation requires a conducive environment for development and growth. Uterine issues can impact the embryo implantation process. Ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and fibroids can interfere with the embryo’s capability to attach to the uterine lining safely. This causes implantation failure. Uterus structural abnormalities, immunity issues, and scar tissue formation may also lead toIVF failure. A hysteroscopy or ultrasound may help identify such abnormalities.

3. Sperm Issues

Sperm-related issues can influence the success of IVF treatment. Sperm quality and motility are key factors for fertilization and embryo formation. Abnormality of sperm morphology, low sperm count, or poor motility may lower the likelihood of successful egg fertilization during IVF. In instances of low-quality or quantity sperm, the viable sperm available can be inadequate to penetrate the egg effectively. This can prevent the formation of a healthy embryo.

4. Hormonal Imbalances

Hormonal imbalances can also disrupt the chances of success with IVF. Hormones like progestogen play a role in preparing the uterine lining for embryo implantation. Insufficient progestogen may result in a thinner or less receptive uterus. This makes it difficult for the embryo to implant. An imbalance in hormones reduces the chances of secure attachment between the embryo and uterine lining. Changes in lifestyles and the use of medication can help regulate hormones, potentially increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy.

5. Genetic Abnormalities

Genetic abnormalities can affect IVF success rates. In some instances, an embryo might appear normal, but it may contain genetic deformities that prevent it from implanting or developing correctly. Genetic testing of the embryos might help detect the risk of certain genetic diseases or conditions. This can assist in implanting healthy embryos.

6. Implantation Window

The implantation window is when the endometrium is receptive to embryo implantation. This period is narrow. If IVF treatment is insufficiently timed according to the woman’s menstrual cycle, there might be a chance of implantation failure. A fertility specialist may evaluate your circumstances and adjust the timing of the procedure accordingly.

Learn More About IVF Treatment

IVF is a treatment that can help couples struggling with infertility. The treatment often requires extensive planning, testing, and medical expertise. It has a higher success rate, though IVF failure can happen for various reasons. These reasons include embryo quality, sperm issues, uterine factors, hormonal imbalances, genetic abnormalities, and poor implantation windows. Contact a professional fertility specialist to learn more about the possible causes of IVF failure. Fertility specialists help you identify the leading cause of your unexplained infertility and create a customized treatment plan to address any issues.
